In the winery
All the Chapoutier vineyards are farmed biodynamically, and have been since 1991. The business works with both its own vineyards and purchased fruit. While the family owns vineyards throughout the region, its Hermitage sites – totalling 24 hectares – are the most famous, producing six red and three white cuvées. Le Pavillon was first made in 1989 and is their largest single-vineyard cuvée (with around 7,000 bottles made), coming from a plot of old vines in Bessards.
Le Méal and L’Ermite were both first made 1996. The former was planted in the 1940s and is a warm, steep-sloped site, producing a predictable ripe and rich style of Syrah (with around 5,000 bottles produced).
There is also a white Méal cuvée, with only 400 cases made. L’Ermite has a similar production level to Le Méal for the red (around 5,000 bottles) and comes from 100-year-old vines close to Hermitage’s famous chapel. Only 150 cases are made of the white of the same name. Les Greffieux was introduced to the line-up in 2001, with around 3,000 bottles made. There is an additional white cuvée, De l’Orée.
