Meursault Premier Cru La Pièce sous le Bois brilliantly captures the style of Alvina Pernot’s winemaking with a focus on purity and tension, whilst exhibiting the exuberance of Meursault with its rich clay soils adding weight and power to the wine.
The vineyard sits at the highest altitude of Meursault and is the finest Premier Cru within the Blagny village demarcation, located at the top of both the Puligny and Meursault appellations. This cool site excels in sunny, warm vintages like 2019 and beautifully showcases the brilliant contrast of power and freshness Alvina brings to the appellation.
Alvina Pernot is one of Burgundy’s most exciting up-and-coming producers. She established her own label in 2018 together with her husband Philippe Abadie. Like her grandfather, the Puligny-Montrachet-based icon Paul Pernot, Alvina’s focus revolves around the Premier Crus of Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault. She tends to pick a few days earlier than her family estate with an emphasis on freshness and tautness. At the all-important pressing stage, Alvina opts for the traditional vertical press. She believes it has a distinct qualitative advantage despite losing 15-20% more juice than modern presses: “It reduces oxidation, providing a greater purity of juice with naturally higher acidity and therefore freshness.”
The wine is wonderfully pure and precise in 2019 and illustrates the exceptional talent at this exciting new estate in the Côte de Beaune.
“Alvina’s 2019 Meursault 1er Cru La Pièce sous le Bois has a delicate tight nose of white flowers, ripe lemons and green apples with a hint of reduction that dissipates with aeration. On the palate, the wine is more expressive with ripe pears, fresh almonds, key-lime peel and a clean, pure minerality. The flavour profile is ripe but the acidity builds up on the palate retaining a very pleasurable balance with the richness and density of fruits developing into a precise and elegant iodine-driven finish. The length is impressive, this should be approachable young and age beautifully for 10 years +.”
