The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes is drinking very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp Anjou pear, hazelnuts, bread dough and waxy lemon rind. It's medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with superb depth at the core, racy acids and a long finish that's just a touch marked by its élevage in predominantly used cooperage, which contributes a touch of back-end bitterness that depresses my score for an otherwise superb effort.

Light nose. Well sculpted with some chalky texture on the finish. Less opulent than some – verging on stodginess. But good extract and impact. (JR)
