Coming from vines near Canon La Gaffelière and mostly Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Château Petit Gravet Aîné is legit good and plays with the big boys in the vintage. Red and black fruits, sappy herbs, flowers, and a kiss of background oak all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness as well as beautiful finesse, balance, fine tannins, and a great finish. Give it a few years and it should keep for 15+ years, if not longer.

The 2021 Petit Gravet Ainé showed well out of barrel. Dominated by 90% Cabernet Franc, it has a fresh, saline bouquet that managed to achieve phenolic ripeness. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannins on the entry that segue into a creamy-textured mid-palate and a very cohesive, white pepper- and garrigue -tinged finish. Excellent!

The 2021 Petit Gravet Aîné is a potent, brooding wine. Cabernet Franc takes the leading role here. The 2021 unfurls in the glass with deep, powerful notes of dark cherry, plum, rose petal, mint and a kick of French oak. This is a wine of substance and intensity, driven and unusually hard. It’s a bit of a bruiser, with tough, angular contours. I will be curious to see how this ages.

The 2021 Petit Gravet Ainé was cropped at 29hL/ha and contains 90% Cabernet Franc. It has a bouquet of blackberry and cassis scents, quite floral and well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied, well balanced and expresses the variety well. Fresh and saline on the finish, this comes recommended (especially if you have a penchant for Cabernet Franc).
