Score 93/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2013

(52% petit verdot and 48% cabernet sauvignon): Good bright ruby-red. Ripe aromas of black raspberry, plum, cherry, leather and licorice, complicated by subtle soil tones. The palate shows an almost chocolatey sweetness to the red fruit and pepper flavors. This fairly large-scaled wine benefits from insidious, harmonious acidity, which carries its flavors through a fairly tannic finish. There's an elegance to the petit verdot here.

(52% petit verdot and 48% cabernet sauvignon): Good full red. Wild, musky, slightly reduced aromas of currant, mocha, flowers, caraway seed, meat and earth. Broad and wild in the mouth, with edgy acidity nicely buffered by mid-palate density. Juicy cranberry, redcurrant and coffee flavors carry through impressively to the broad finish, which features big, dusty, tooth-coating tannins and excellent length. The wine's petit verdot component finished its sugar fermentation and did its ML in concrete eggs. This may ultimately show more personality than the 2009 bottling.
