Slightly muddy dark purplish crimson. Big, round, sweet but with a sort of yeast-extract brutality on the finish, and pretty awkward tannins. Falls away on the chewy end. (JR)

From a vineyard next to Figeac, on the upper plateau (towards Pomerol) of Saint-Emilion, the 2016 Château La Marzelle reveals a saturated purple color as well as a smoking good bouquet of cassis, graphite, gravelly minerality, and background oak. Rich, full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, this is a brilliant wine. The blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc all brought up in new oak. It’s worth noting that this terroir had a poor reputation in the past but has been completely renovated by Jean-Luc Thunevin. Showing brilliantly on the two occasions I was able to taste it, readers should put this estate on the radar.

The 2016 La Marzelle came across rather heavy-handed out of barrel. It has a showy, ripe bouquet of macerated small black cherries, black olive compote and some glycerin. There is real intensity here. The palate is medium-bodied and quite toasty in style, with supple tannin lending gentle grip. I appreciate the smooth texture and the spiciness that manifests on the finish. This has potential, even if it is not my preferred style.

Big black fruit but no hint of jam, married to a fullish body and plenty of supple tannins, making a bold statement. Add rather soft acidity and this is easy to enjoy now, but the way it opens up in the glass suggests good aging potential, too. Drink or hold.
