This well-placed, sunny and southeast-facing Premier Cru vineyard neighbours Clos Saint-Jacques on the Combe Lavaut. Faiveley has over four hectares of vines, with a higher-altitude section on calcareous soils that brings finesse and minerality, complemented by heavier clay soils that lend power and richness. It happens to be Erwan Faiveley’s desert-island wine, and it’s easy to see why. The 2022 is particularly intense – a tight ball of bramble fruit vibrating at its core, yet this powerful fruit profile is offset by a lush juiciness and chalky tannin outline. Plush yet driven, with mouthwatering acidity and a refined, mineral structure, this is superb.
This well-placed Premier Cru vineyard neighbours Clos Saint-Jacques on the heightened Combe Lavaut. The 2021 is a real highlight from our tasting at this impressive producer. The nose is scented with sweet, dark cherry, complemented by pepper and floral aromatics which mingle effortlessly with the fruit. On the palate, this has notable precision – with a firm yet fine-boned texture, long and silken. The finish is pinpoint with an iodine edge.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru showed better in bottle than from barrel. It has a bright and pretty nose with brambly red fruit, crushed stone and light rose petal scents that are initially attractive, though with aeration it seems to lose some of its detail and mineralité . The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry, gentle grip and well balanced with a cohesive, very sapid saline finish that beckons you back. Not a crowd pleaser and it needs time, but I can see the potential here. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is a well-defined but less harmonious bouquet than the Lavaux, brambly red fruit, autumn leaves and light black pepper scents. It has a persuasive airiness about it. The palate is well balanced with sour cherry on the entry, brittle tannins, attenuating a little towards the finish where it just lacks the flesh of the Lavaux.
