Tasting notes
FINE+RARE, Apr 2023

An initially restrained nose of just ripe strawberry, cassis, blackcurrant jelly and faint violet unfurls on the palate, offering up a rich, round mouthfeel. The tannins are supple and quite polished, already well integrated. A juicy, approachable style of Margaux even in its youth, the 2022 Marquis d’Alesme is a solar wine that was able to capture the essence of the warm, sunny vintage while still retaining a sense of finesse and exuberance supported by zesty acidity. Blend: 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc

The 2022 Marquis d'Alesme Becker has an outgoing, fruit-driven nose: blackberry and boysenberry fruit, violet and light iris flower scents coming through with time. There is just a little oak to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, a little granular in texture, modest weight but cohesive throughout, with a satisfying, white pepper-tinged finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

Beautiful Cabernet notes of currants, leafy tobacco, menthol, and lovely floral notes all define the 2022 Château Marquis D'Alesme, a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, seamless, elegant Margaux. It has a rich, upfront style, yet it nevertheless brings solid tannic grip. I love it today, yet it's going to take a decade to hit prime time. The blend is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, hitting 14.5% alcohol. It will see its 30th birthday in fine form.

The 2022 Marquis d'Alesme Becker has an intense nose with a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and light iodine scents moving toward more floral aromas with aeration. This gains in terms of delineation with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with silky-smooth tannins. This is one of the more modern Margaux wines, plush with veins of blueberry and vanilla toward the finish. Time will temper this Margaux, so be patient.
