The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnet 1er Cru feels a little stewed on the nose and shows some oxidation. The palate is actually better with a pleasant citric feel and well-judged acidity, and it actually finished with some style thanks to the pretty, brambly black fruit. I am not completely convinced that this is representative.

Pale garnet. Very pungent on the nose with great pace and excitement. Lovely stuff with a beginning, middle and end. (JR)

(from 45-year-old vines; 25% new oak): Deep ruby-red. Slightly reduced aromas of currant, iron, dried flowers and dark chocolate. Moderately thick but juicy and fine-grained, with medicinal cherry and menthol flavors complemented by a saline quality. Offers a captivating blend of subtle sweetness, pliancy and energy. Finishes quite suave, with terrific rising length. Much more about finesse than power. Boillot told me that his holding in Champonnets is virtually split into two halves, the higher one on rocky, mineral soil and the lower one on red clay. A splendid Gevrey premier cru in the making.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet has an elegant bouquet with woodland, autumn leaf notes filtering through the attractive and well-defined red berry fruit. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, plenty of red cherry and wild strawberry fruit laced with brown spice, fanning out with some confidence toward the finish. Excellent.
