49% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. I had a spare glass so thought I would compare the grand vin with this second wine in 2020. Blackish purple – very deep coloured! Mulberry nose – very accessible, with less obvious tannin than in most grands vins. Just very slightly sour on the end with a hint of tarriness. But well made and it might even be reasonably priced.  (JR)

Tasted blind. Black core with purplish rim. Smells rich and warmly dark-fruited. Touch of rubbery reduction that should blow off. Big and juicy at the core, the tannins firm and smoothed. Doesn’t have the power of some. (JH)

The 2020 Dame de Montrose does not quite have the horsepower of its peers on the nose—quite floral and Margaux-like—though it is nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, sweet entry. Marmalade- and licorice-infused black fruit lead to a sinewy, slightly blocky finish. It just lacks a bit of finesse, though for a Deuxième Vin ? No complaints. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

49% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Black core with purple rim. Pure black fruit: cassis and charry black plum. Power and fruit intensity coiled within the dry tannins. (JH)
