The 2001 Musigny Grand Cru is a fair-to-middling wine by Christophe Roumier’s high standards. I find it smudged on the nose, and missing the delineation of other vintages, as if the wood wants to shout over the fruit or terroir expression. Eventually I am able to eke out scents of blackberry and chlorophyll, but it never quite slips into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with pointed sour cherry on the entry and slightly chewy tannins. There is modest depth, but this lacks some harmony toward the tea-leaf- and espresso-tinged finish. Tasted in November 2018 at the Roumier Musigny dinner at Épure in Hong Kong.

Saturated, deep red-ruby. Captivating aromas of framboise, espresso and dark chocolate. Highly concentrated, precise and vibrant, with a whiplash of sappy raspberry liqueur flavor. Thick, broad, seamless wine with a very long, gripping finish. Richer and subtler than the Bonnes-Mares but less obviously muscular. Appears to have even more extract than the 2002. This will need six to eight years of additional bottle aging.

A wine of wonderful depth, the elegant 2001 Musigny, exhibits a nose of blackberries, fresh herbs, and blueberries. This classy, pure, lively effort is light to medium-bodied, has impressive clarity of fruit, and boasts a long, cherry-filled finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2012.
