2023 Domaine Armand Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques was one of the more backward, primary wines in the range when I visited. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries, burning embers and orange zest, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a sweet, creamy core of fruit framed by an elegantly muscular chassis of powdery tannin.

Cask sample. Darkish mid ruby. Magnificent perfume – cassis, raspberry and violets lifting from the glass. Ripe, velvety texture on the palate and real volume. Very complete, very long. Excellent wine. (MH)

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a more intense bouquet than the Ruchottes with blood-orange-infused red fruit, exquisite definition and supreme focus. The palate is medium-bodied with finely sculpted tannins, a little spicier than Rousseau's other cuvées, with fine weight toward the finish. Touches of black pepper and dark chocolate linger temptingly. Superb.
