Sangiovese with 20% Merlot (planted in 1983). Rich, plummy and smelling evocatively of Christmas pud. Soaring, elegant palate. Figs, raisins and plums with a dab of fennel and aniseed, and then effortlessly long. (TC)

The 2006 Chianti Classico Vigneto La Casuccia (Sangiovese, Merlot) reveals stunning clarity and freshness in its black cherries, violets, minerals and sweet spices. This dense, richly-textured wine possesses staggering richness and elegance along with breathtaking clarity and precision. Notes of leather, smoke, tar and licorice linger on the long, intense finish.

I am not sure I possess the vocabulary to do these majestic wines – the reds in particular – justice. Simply put, Castello di Ama’s 2006s are spectacular and every bit as magnificent as they were when I tasted them late that year. Simply put, this is a profound set of new releases from Marco and Lorenza Pallanti. Sadly, few readers are likely to have an opportunity to experience the top wines, as pricing is way up in the stratosphere. Importer: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 603-1461

Explosive and potent, the 2006 Chianti Classico Vigneto La Casuccia certainly makes an impression. At nearly twenty years of age, it remains vibrant and even a bit austere. Red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, spice and tobacco lend nuance, but I am most drawn to the wine's energy. The 2006 is showing so well today.
