The 2011 Pommard Clos des Epenots 1er Cru is missing some vigor on the nose and feels a little anonymous compared to some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy, rather dry tannin, grippy in the mouth but rather green on the finish. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.

The 2011 Pommard Grand Clos des Epenots 1er Cru rather pales against the excellent 2010. There is a stalky element that seems to obscure terroir expression. The palate is nicely structured with a discrete spiciness that comes through towards the finish that attenuates a little prematurely.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Pommard 1er Cru Grand Clos des Epenots ‘11 has a nicely controlled bouquet with bright, vivacious brambly red fruit, quite stemmy with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with good weight, although the wood tannins are a little obtrusive at the moment. This will need a couple more years to coalesce and I do hope that the oak is fully assimilated over the next few months. Fingers crossed.

Bright, deep red. Tangy red cherry, raspberry, spice and fresh herb aromas are clearly riper than those of the Fremiers. Enticingly sweet, saline and vigorous, with sappy red fruit flavors lifted by pepper, minerals and spicy soil tones. Very refreshing, perfumed, concentrated wine with a long finish featuring sweet, fine-grained tannins.
