The 2012 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is one of the standouts of a dinner studded with gems from this village, and that's a considerable achievement given that this is not a top vintage. Pure wild strawberry, raspberry, wilted rose petals and balsam on the nose have a crystalline purity. There's beautifully integrated oak. The palate displays fine delineation, focused and tensile with filigree tannins and a mineral-driven undertow towards the finish. This Vosne-Romanée ticks away like a Swiss watch, evidencing some astute winemaking. Utterly entrancing.

Healthy bright red. Smoky mineral lift to the aromas of raspberry, black cherry and flowers. Densely packed, sappy and extremely fine-grained, showing outstanding verve to its vibrant cherry and mineral flavors. The palate-drenching rising finish combines soil-driven salinity with the compelling sweetness of the vintage's best examples. For all its early sex appeal, this seemed to close down in the glass.

Good deep, bright red. Musky red berries, minerals and flowers on the perfumed nose. The minerality carries through on the fine-grained palate, which offers compelling sweetness in spite of its youthful tightness. A note of hard candy is joined by a saline element on the very long, gripping finish. Wonderfully precise for a pH of 3.55.

The 2012 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées boasts fabulous breadth and stunning resonance. Dark red stone fruits, smoke, tobacco and licorice are all wonderfully focused in the glass. The 2012 is voluptuous, classy and nuanced from the very first taste. There is a lot to look forward to here. Best of all, the Brûlées is a bit less clenched than some of the other wines in the range and is likely to drink well with minimum cellaring.
