Drink 2015, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2015

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Beaumonts from Jean Grivot has a light blackcurrant cordial and raspberry preserve scented nose, but like Maxime Chuerlin (Georges Noëllat), it seems to lack cohesion and conviction. There is also a distracting metallic note. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, blocky and chunky in the mouth with too much extraction on the finish that deprives this wine of detail. This bottle was simply not performing.

Healthy full red. Knockout nose combines raspberry, underbrush, smoke and truffle, lifted by vibrant white pepper and floral nuances. Then wonderfully vinous and taut, displaying a bulletproof solidity to its intense flavors of raspberry, flowers, pepper and earth. Finishes sappy, saline and long, with serious but noble, fine-grained tannins. This wine was a knockout from barrel a year ago and is every bit as promising today.

Bright purple colour, ripe black fruit and slightly rubbery tannin. Seems rather heavily ‘worked’ – not as gracious and delicate as you might expect from Vosne-Romanée. Pinched. (RH)

Deep red with ruby highlights. Penetrating perfume of blackberry, violet and rose petal. Silky on entry, then juicy and light on its feet, showing rare refinement to its dark berry and floral flavors. Less sweet today than the Suchots but even more impressive on the elegant, firm, slowly building finish, which is lifted by a pungent peppery element. Great potential here. This and the Suchots are at grand cru level in 2012.
