Score 92/100 · Drink 2021-2031, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Dec 2023

From a largely forgotten vintage that was ravaged by frost (with the exception of estates that benefited from the tempering influence of the Gironde), the 1991 Mouton Rothschild is drinking beautifully, bursting with aromas of minty cassis, espresso roast and exotic spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and fleshy palate. After 30 years, the wine's tannins have largely melted away to deliver a wine of charm and generosity.

Incredibly fine and subtle for the vintage with tobacco, black currant and berry aromas and flavors, medium body and a long flavorful, silky finish. Drink or hold. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1994.

The 1991 exhibits a moderately dark ruby/purple color, as well as a promising and complex nose of such classic Pauillac aromas as lead pencil, roasted nuts, and ripe cassis. The initial richness is quickly obliterated by frightful levels of tannin, and a tough, hard finish. Although there is an interesting and alluring dimension to this wine, the tannin level is excessively high and the wine is likely to dry out after 10-15 years of cellaring. Readers who admire austere, fruitless wines will rate it higher. Feb 1994, www.robertparker.com
