Score 88/100 · Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous, Jun 2024

Forest floor, tomato leaf and farmyard subtleties are all framed in the rustic 1994 Rouge, which has past its prime. Dried figs further indicate an advanced evolutionary state. On the palate, the 1994 bundles soft tannins, bright acidity and faded fruit before culminating in a finish of moderate length.

69.1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5.2% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 1% Tannat, 4.3% Malbec, 2% Pinot Noir, 11.4% Syrah, 1% rare varieties. TA 3.50  g/l (sulphuric) , pH 3.48. Lovely tarnished bronze colour. Loads of new oak on the nose – quite unlike the other vintages. Almost more like Rioja than the Bordeaux with which it is routinely compared. Firm tannins, medium body. Finish dominated by the coconut and sweet scent of oak. (RH)

30% Viognier, 30% Chardonnay, 30% Petit Manseng, 5% Roussanne and Marsanne. Pale straw. Slightly duller nose than the 1993, but not dead. It is somewhat lacking in acidity, but has intensity. Hurry to drink! (JR)
