The 1993 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru must be the best that Christophe Roumier produced in the first half of the 1990s, despite my lukewarm reception to two previous bottles over ten years ago! This has a refined bouquet that demonstrated more fruit intensity than the 1994: dark berry fruit, hints of Lapsang Souchong and shucked oyster shells, and cloves emerging with time. The palate is beautifully balanced with great depth and a superb line of acidity. It is quite powerful for a 1993, leaning towards the richer side of the spectrum, with a wonderful saline finish. I would drink this now rather than keep. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in London.

This is the third time I have tasted this vintage from Christophe Roumier and the best bottle that I have encountered. That brambly nose remains intact with less leafiness than I recall, although the aromatics do not possess the complexity of other ’93 Grand Crus tasted alongside. The palate is sinewy on the entry, more youthful than I was anticipating with harmonious, light tannins but good weight on the red-berried finish. For me, it is just missing a little personality compared to more recent vintages, but it is still a pleasurable Bonnes-Mares, albeit one I would not buy given present inflated secondary market prices. Tasted May 2013.
