Tasted at the Clos des Chênes vertical in London, the 1993 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is (yet another) wine from a vintage that has blossomed in recent years, defying the pessimistic predictions that shrouded its birth. It has a vibrant bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, wild strawberry and cranberry, subtle earthy tones, harmonious and entrancing. The palate is seductive and quite sweet and tart on the entry, a hint of sour cherry here on what is a wonderfully proportioned wine. So fresh and crystalline, like so many 1993s, it lingers long in the mouth and is simply the manifestation of mature Volnay in all its glory. Tasted November 2015.
