Tasting notes
Good bright ruby. Black fruits, licorice, menthol and a mineral note on the complex nose. A real fruit bomb in the mouth, with a compellingly lush, layered texture and superb sweetness countered by harmonious acidity. The black cherry and dark chocolate flavors are lifted by a suggestion of graphite minerality on the back half, which features ripe, broad, building tannins and lovely purity and length. The 21% petit verdot component contributes body and structure to the blend, says assistant winemaker Jeff Owens. A beauty.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a totally different beast than any other Plumpjack wine I have ever tasted because of its dark, brooding personality. In 2009 the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is paired with 21% Petit Verdot, which marks the wine to a significant degree. Smoke, tar, licorice, savory herbs and graphite are some of the many notes that burst from this extroverted, intense, totally compelling Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Wow!

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. I have been following Plumpjack since first visiting the winery nearly a decade ago. This is a stunning set of wines from winemaker Tony Biagi, who has succeeded in achieving both astonishing richness and finesse pretty much across the board. Tel. (707) 945-1220
