Score 95/100 · Drink 2019-2029, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin is pure velvet and silk. Layers of beautifully delineated, nuanced fruit flow effortlessly from the glass. The vintage has given the Charmes a bit more amplitude than is often the case. Rose petals and violets bring everything back to a typical if a bit generous expression of Charmes. The 2009 is very young but has all of the ingredients to develop beautifully in bottle.

The lower-end wines are marked by the year to a significantly greater extent than the top wines. Importer: Diageo Chateau and Estate Wines Company, New York, NY; tel. (212) 419-1400

Medium red. Deep nose offers raspberry, coffee, musky herbs and caramel, along with a chocolatey suggestion of ripeness. Sweet and rich in the mouth, with a smoky quality and some higher-pitched floral and herbal nuances. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins. I doubt this has the energy for a long life in bottle, but I like the contribution of the stems here.
