Gosh the label of even Lafite's second wine looks so classy! Deep crimson. Lightish and elegant but not that much follow through. Still quite youthful. This wine had lots of punch but not much of Lafite's trademark subtlety. I would hang on to it for quite a while if I had some. This was bought in January 2010 at £120 a bottle, which seems absolutely crazy to me, even if it is now changing hands for £300 a bottle, thanks to Chinese demand. (JR)

Looks quite young with rather simple berry aromas. Then jagged acidity and greenness. The most disappointing Pauillac so far. Very raw and underrripe. Later – it opened up a bit in the glass so I added half a point. The most expensive wine of the flght – because of Chinese demand. (JR)

The elegant second wine, 2001 Carruades de Lafite reveals notions of lead pencil shavings intertwined with cherry, currant, cranberry, and wet stone-like aromas. Drink this medium-bodied, up-front Pauillac over the next decade.

Dark red. Subdued, lightly herbal aromas of currant, blueberry, tobacco leaf, chocolate, menthol and shoe polish. Perfumed and penetrating, with a restrained sweetness and a slight herbal edge. Finishes youthfully dry, juicy and persistent. This very elegantly styled wine grew suppler with aeration, showing a flavor of bitter cherry and finish. Very Pauillac.
