A modern, sleek Barolo, the 2005 Via Nuova has aged gracefully. The flavors are dark, bold and incisive throughout, with striking interplay of intense fruit and firm, underlying tannins. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2005 is still quite young. Lavender, mint, plum and dark spices meld into the expressive finish. The Via Nuova is more nervous in style than the Cannubi, and has also absorbed the French oak barrels better.

Deep ruby with orange tinges. Very lifted and forward. Cherry drops and raspberry. A little more full-bodied and fruit driven than 2006, and a little less complex and less polished. Ends a little dry on the finish, but has the stuffing for ageing. (WS)

Very closed on the nose. Some violets and black cherry fruit on the palate, sour acidity, aggressive tannins and a bitter note. Makes it very hard to like at first sip – requires food. (RH)

Deep red-ruby. Very pure but reticent aromas of rose petal and spices. Richer but a bit more medicinal and brooding in the middle palate than the Cannubi, showing less early sweetness. There's an almost inky quality to this very backward wine, as well as bigger dusty tannins that call for several years of cellaring. Next to the suave Cannubi this currently comes off as a bit chunky.
