Stolen away from the family's tiny cache of back vintages, the 2001 Cote Rotie la Landonne is a clear marker that even top wines don't live forever. While still charming for its notes of crushed stone, florals and wood ash, the fruit has largely faded. Medium to full-bodied and nicely rounded on the mid-palate, it's thinning out on the tart finish. Drink up.

Rostaing owns 1.6 ha of La Landonne. This is the only one of his Côte Rôtie wines in which he retains some stems (50%). 2 years in oak (30% new). Uses demi-muids as well as barriques. Macerates and ferments quite warm – up to 37 °C. 750 c/s produced. 100% Syrah. Mid garnet. Perfumed and delicate, lavender and spice along with sweet red plums. Pepper and herbs and maybe a touch of truffle. Attractive leafy freshness and delicacy on the palate. Fine tannins more fully resolved than in the Gérin. Fresh acidity and lovely finesse. Very long and elegant. (JH)

NB older vintage. Light ruby. Transparent and subtle and very Côte Rôtie. Lively and light and fresh and appetising. Scrubbed fresh. Youth hostel – no luxury here, just asceticism. Well done! (JR)

Good deep red. Reticent nose offers roasted raspberry, brown spices, woodsmoke, pepper and tapenade. Powerful and rather closed; much less approachable today than the basic bottling, showing more oak and a strong acid spine. Pure and linear. Best today on the long, subtle, perfumed aftertaste. This needs at least five years in the cellar.
