Served blind alongside Léoville Las Cases 2001 and notably more purple, drier and a bit more severe. Bright, still-youthful crimson but a bit more mellow on the palate and over time in the glass this became decidedly more charming. Only slightly austere and with a black-olive character. Still very much evolving, from the Jean-Guillaume Prats era, made the year after the estate was bought by the current owner, Michel Reybier. (JR)

The 2001 Château Cos D'Estournel is fully mature, with a complex, sweet nose of darker currants, leafy tobacco, damp earth, and truffle that shows more floral and spicy nuances with time in the glass. These all carry to a medium-bodied, elegant Saint- Estèphe with fine tannins and terrific balance. This classy, elegant wine is best enjoyed over the coming decade.

The 2001 Cos d’Estournel has a fresher nose than the 2000, showing more focus and vigor and delivering black cherries mixed with fig, blood orange and light cigar box aromas. Side by side, this is certainly more youthful. The palate is well balanced with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, and fine grip and freshness. This is still quite tight at 20 years old and would certainly benefit from decanting. Blood orange and a light sprinkling of white pepper appear toward the finish. (NM)
