Tasting notes
(from vines in Chambolle on the middle of the slope on mostly white soil; Mortet lost 60% of the crop to frost, making three barrels in the place of a normal seven; vinified with 70% whole clusters): Bright, deep red with ruby highlights. Wonderfully subtle, complex nose combines scents of black raspberry, boysenberry, mocha, spices and flowers. Like liquid velvet in the mouth but with a distinctly dark, brooding cast to its black and purple fruit flavors. Medicinal in the way of a very long and potentially long-lived wine but already showing terrific sweetness; as fine-grained as this wine is, it's hiding more than it's showing today. Finishes with explosive, mouthfilling perfume that makes it hard to spit.

The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru was 70% affected by frost and had 50% whole bunch and 70% new oak. The vines are located on terres blanches. It has a fragrant, quite mineral-driven bouquet, perhaps more precise than others that I encountered in barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied quality on the entry, blue fruit mixed with licorice and mint, leading to a very poised and focused finish that remains for eternity in the mouth, like the trace of a firework that remains fixed in the night sky.
