The 1997 Clos Vougeot is medium to dark ruby-colored, and reveals an extremely ripe nose of dark berries, spices, and perfume. This magnificent offering bursts on the palate with black fruits, Asian spices, cherries, and hints of licorice. Medium to full-bodied, powerful, expansive, broad, and yet elegant, this is a first-rate wine from a generally underachieving grand cru vineyard. Its forward, sur-maturite-laced fruit lead to a somewhat austere and structured, yet supple tannin-packed, long finish. Projected maturity: 2001-2008.
