Plums, blackberries, ground pepper, and graphite notes all emerge from the 2019 Aspire, which has plenty of background chocolaty oak, full body, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. Based on 86% Syrah and 14% Grenache, fermented in concrete tanks and aged in two-thirds new French oak, this powerful, mouth-filling effort will drink well for 7-8 years. Another estate that’s at the top of their game is Law Estate Wines, with the wines made by Philipp Pfunder now for many years. Coming from a higher elevation site on the west side of Paso Robles, these are rich, powerful, yet always balanced wines with singular characters.

A full-bodied red with lots of rich dark fruit, meat and toasted oak. Creamy and round. Fruity astringency to this that gives energy and focus. Mineral and salted-caramel notes at the end. 86% syrah and 14% grenache. Drink now or hold.

The 2019 Aspire is a blend of 86% Syrah and 14% Grenache, matured 22 months in 66% new French oak. Medium ruby-purple, it opens with broody tones of cast iron and blue fruits, with wafts of purple flowers and aniseed. The full-bodied palate is well-framed, with grainy tannins and fresh acidity, and it finishes minerally. This deserves another 3-5 years in bottle and will be long-lived in the cellar.

Inky ruby. Ripe red and blue fruits, incense, potpourri, mocha and exotic spices on the intensely perfumed nose. Alluringly sweet boysenberry, black raspberry, oak spice and lavender violet pastille flavors are energized by smoky mineral and cracked pepper flourishes. Shows impressive depth but comes off lively, showing strong, spicy thrust on a long, youthfully tannic and floral-dominated finish. 66% new French oak. (JR)
