The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino captivates with notes of crushed ashen stones and savory herbs, lifted by hints of camphor and cinnamon-dusted blackberries. This is sheer elegance, with textures of pure silk propelled by vibrant acidity as mineral-tinged wild berries and exotic spices slowly saturate the palate. Still quite youthful, the 2013 tapers off with fine-grained tannins and hints of sour citrus, maintaining a lovely lift as suggestions of licorice fade. The Vigna Schiena d'Asino is easily one of the top wines of the vintage.

Maturing ruby with narrow bricky rim. Dried fruit, cherry and dark chocolate on the nose. Subdued, ripe yet tangy fruit that creeps over the tongue, and firm but not overwhelming tannins. A little tough at the moment, and in need of much more time. (WS)

Some dried-cherry and dry-wood aromas with light baking-spice influence, leading to a palate with a succulent, supple core of fine tannins that deliver easygoing and appealing style. Drink or hold.

With only 5,000 bottles produced, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino might prove difficult to find and buy. If you do locate this wine however, I am very happy to recommend it despite its high price. All the senses are treated to a full-on Brunello experience that excels on all fronts, from intensity and balance to length of mouthfeel. Fruit for this wine comes from a single vineyard site located at the crest of a hill, or the so-called donkey's back ("schiena d'asino" in Italian). The vines were planted in 1975 and this vineyard designate wine is only made in the best years. The buoyant bouquet delivers dark fruit backed by tarry spice and savory cured tobacco. This wine offers sophistication, power and elegance.
