The 2004 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru was being served from magnum. This was a wine that actually showed well from barrel but every time I have encountered the wine in bottle...agh...there is that pungent, malodorous vegetal note on the nose. That translates onto the palate that is dominated by the harsh green tannin, so raw and bitter than my face was scrunched up afterwards. I adore Thierry Brouin who made this wine but I just think this is borderline faulty. Tasted at Goedhuis's Burgundy tasting at Vintners Hall.

Relatively pale. Autumn mulch on the rather smudgy nose. Lots of sweet fruit. Really very winning on the palate. The same sweetness of fruit as the 2006. (JR)

Good full red. Ripe plum, briary spices, subtle herbs and a peppery nuance on the nose. At once lush and tangy, with terrific lift to the moderately ripe flavors of dark plum, spice, flowers and pepper. Perfumed and flavorful wine with the energy of the vintage in spades. Not fleshy but there's no shortage of stuffing here. Finishes with strong spice character and piquant white pepper lift. This very suave grand cru will be seductive in two or three years. Like the 2001 version, this is an accurate expression of terroir

Here the aromas are more elegant and more complex but not necessarily riper with high-toned red Pinot fruit and an attractive dried herb note that sits atop earthy yet fine and refined medium full flavors that deliver outstanding detail and delineation. This is a classically styled wine with prominent but ripe acidity and dusty tannins that have just enough phenolic maturity. This will be one of the more elegant and refined vintages of Clos des Lambrays and the balance is such that it should age well over the moderate term.
