1998 Domaine Armand Rousseau Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

An elegant and very pinot nose that is still largely primary in character complements round, pleasant and pretty middle weight flavors that are attractive and easy to like if not especially complex or powerful and while there is certainly a moderate lashing of tannic structure, this is surprisingly supple and forward for what it is. In short, as is usually the case with this wine, it is perfectly pleasant but certainly not distinguished for its level. I would continue to hold this for another few years but it could be drunk with pleasure now with food.

Rousseau’s 1988 Charmes-Chambertin was superb. Deeply expressive, it blossomed on the palate with endless layers of flavor, stunning balance, and a note of sweetness on the long, lingering finish.

Palish medium red. Aromatic nose of raspberry, red cherry and herbs; whiff of cough syrup. Supple, rather simple red fruit flavors of decent intensity. Finishes with ripe, easygoing tannins and decent length.
