The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace is a powerful, deep wine. It has aged at a glacial pace, which is great news for readers who still own bottles. Red berry fruit, iron, cedar, tobacco, licorice and incense build as this rich, potent Cabernet shows off its character. Hints of rose petal, kirsch, hard candy, tobacco and cedar linger. I find it hard to suggest a 20 year old Cabernet needs more time, but the 2001 is still young!

Bright, dark ruby-red. Crushed black fruits, menthol and licorice pastille on the slightly medicinal nose, plus a touch of funky leather. Dense, dark and firm, conveying serious stuffing in a very dry style, showing very little easy fruit sweetness or pliancy. The dark berry flavors are complicated by notes of tobacco and graphite. This very firm, minerally wine finishes with serious tongue-dusting, almost parching tannins that seemed to grow even tougher with aeration. The wine's huge structure is impressive but will it ever become more fun to drink. I find it hard to imagine that it will gain from more cellaring.
