The 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is poured from an ex-domaine magnum. It is now showing just a small amount of bricking on the rim. The bouquet is attractive with a lovely herbal lift, just a soupçon of juniper and spearmint. The palate is tart on the entry, edgy and maybe angular at first, though it gains cohesion with time. To quibble, it just lacks the mineral drive on the finish that am hoping for. Tasted at "42" restaurant in London.

Very dark and deep – much less evolved-looking than the 2002. A bit brooding; very savoury (cf the sweetness of 2002). Chewy and correct though food is absolutely essential with this wine. Stolid – certainly much more Gevrey than the 2002. Not a charmer but very competent. (JR)
Full red-ruby. Superripe aromas of cherry, raspberry and mocha. Chewy and ripe, with good mid-palate fat and very good flavor development. Here, too, the tannins are fine for the vintage. Today I prefer this to the 2002 version. This wine was bottled in April of 2003, about three months later than the rest of these 2001s.
