More weight here and a distinct touch of violets on the nose. This follows in the mouth with more weight, and more structure still. Some muscular fruit and a great deal of structure underneath it. Not quite the clarity of the preceding wines; a touch more old-fashioned.

Vajra's 2011 Barolo Ravera has begun to flesh out and put on weight in bottle. Today the flavors are darker and broader than they have been in the past, yet there is also a gorgeous sense of aromatic lift and plenty of Ravera tannin to shape the wine's structural framework. I also sense a bit of power that appears to be held back in reserve. I would not at all be surprised to see the 2011 improve from here.

This part of the Ravera vineyard was replanted 13 years ago, when they bought it in 2000. A shade deeper than Bricco delle Viole. Powerful ripe, multilayered Nebbiolo fruit. Lots of concentration, yet has more acidity than Bricco delle Viole. Good freshness and bags of tannins. Perhaps less polished than Bricco and quite a lot to chew on and clearly in need of more bottle age. (WS)

The 2011 Barolo Ravera is bright, focused and silky. Crushed flowers, spices and sweet red berries are all laced together in a highly attractive, mid-weight Barolo loaded with gorgeous inner perfume and expressive, finely-textured fruit. The 2011 doesn’t reach the heights of the 2010, but in exchange it will drink well earlier. This is a terrific showing from the Ravera in only its second commercial release.
