Evolved nose. Compact, quite creamy. Full and smoky. The second bottle was much better. Smoky and round. Very lively. This wine will be discriminated against in the group marks because the first bottle showed badly but actually the second is very good. Very long. (JR)

Extremely tightly wound (especially in contrast to the 1998). Mineral, even slightly nutty. Very austere underneath. Note of white pepper. Very, very clean and crystalline. Powerful and tastes bone dry thanks to all that acidity. (JR)

The tightly wound, aromatically floral 1997 Riesling Frederic-Emile will not be released for at least another two years because this firm believes in marketing their wines as they reach maturity. Its rich, medium body reveals superb complexity, purity, and admirable length. This is a backward, silky-textured, chalk/mineral-dominated wine with extraordinary balance and focus. Projected maturity: 2002-2012+. Importer: Esprit Du Vin French Wine Merchants & Select European Estates, 48 Harbor Park Drive, Port Washington, NY 11050; www.edvwines.com

Subdued but deep aromas of white flowers and lime. Dry (just three grams per liter r.s.), deep and impressively structured. Slow to evolve but already long on personality. Very densely packed and deep. This should develop in bottle for many years. Very long, adamantly dry finish. Jean Trimbach considers this a great vintage for the Frédéric Emile, perhaps in the class of the '83.
