Score 97/100 · Drink 2028-2046, Eric Guido, Vinous, Feb 2026

Classic to the core, the 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wafts up with a seductive bouquet as a whiff of sweet smoke gives way to spiced orange peels, worn leather, rosemary, mint and dried strawberries. This is wonderfully lifted in feel, with cooling acidity that perfectly enlivens its core of citrus-infused red berry fruits. Tart, lively and energetic, the Riserva leaves the cheeks puckered as rosy inner florals cascade across the palate, framed by adolescent tannins. The 2006 is in a beautiful place, but it is slowly maturing at a glacial pace.

This is a beautiful Brunello with dark-berry, balsamic and cedar aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, round and rich. Flavorful finish. Shows focus and balance. Traditional and fascinating. Drink or hold. 1,500 bottles released in 2019.

This is a re-release of a wine that first hit the market some seven years ago. The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is being reintroduced to the market, with only 2,500 bottles. This is a stunning wine that absolutely merits this considerable score increase. Made when dottore Franco Biondi Santi was alive and very present in the winery, this wine shows spectacular elegance and finesse, articulated with fine aromas of forest berry, blue flower, eucalyptus and lightly barbecued smoke. The wine shows extreme Sangiovese elegance and purity, and while the wine is almost fragile in approach, it ultimately reveals more brawn, volume and staying-power than anticipated.

Dense garnet. Dusty and sweet on the nose. Much denser on the palate than the Annata 2007 from this estate. So firm and dry it's almost unapproachable at the moment! Very dry, marked tannins but refreshing fruit. Put this away for a long time! (JR)
