Score 87-90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2004

Dark red. Aromas of black cherry, cassis, minerals and licorice, lifted by a minty nuance. Sweet and lively in the mouth, with flavors of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Finishes with slightly tough oak tannins and a touch of medicinal austerity. I tasted two components of this wine: the one that went into the fermenter by gravity, with a higher percentage of uncrushed berries, was much creamier in texture and less medicinal, with the tannins hitting the palate much later, than the juice that had originally been pumped into the vat.

Very slightly stinky on the nose. Lots of rich, almost decadent, fruit on the palate. Powerful. (JR)
