The 2017 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru is concentrated on the nose but does not quite deliver on delineation or complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and quite rich for a Grèves, offering plenty of rondeur on the finish. Not bad, though it lacks a bit of breeding. More winemaking than wine at the moment. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Beaune Les Grèves 1er Cru is matured in 50% new oak, the maximum Nathalie Tollot believes this vineyard should accept. The wood does come through more prominently on the nose compared to the Clos du Roi, and the palate is quite sinewy at the moment. A broad-shouldered Les Grèves with good acidity and quite a tight grip on the broody, slightly introspective finish. Give this two or three years in bottle.
