Score 93/100 · Drink 2020-2029, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2020

The 2017 Zinfandel Turley Estate is distinguished in this range by its pungent, savory aromatics. Dried flowers, mint, sweet red cherry, cedar and anise are some of the many notes that give the estate its aromatic signatures. The profile is somewhat reminiscent of a wine made with whole clusters, but the 2017 was made from entirely destemmed fruit. The 2017 has really come together nicely; this is such a pretty wine.

From the vineyards located around the winery, planted in 2006, the 2017 Zinfandel Turley Estate has a medium to deep ruby color with a very dark, broody nose of toasted coconut, fried herbs, turned earth, charcuterie and baked black and red fruits. Medium-bodied with a slick texture, it's very broody, earthy and savory in the mouth, featuring olive and meaty notes, with soft tannins and great freshness, finishing long and very savory. 2,000 cases produced.

The 2017 Zinfandel Turley Estate is powerful, rich and savory, with a huge core of fruit that opens up on the mid-palate. All of this fruit was brought in before the Labor Day heat spikes, which may explain why the wine is so tannic and unyielding in the early going. Dried cherry, tobacco, cedar and smoke add the closing shades of nuance.
