Duroché's Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut-Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, one of the domaine's flagship wines, is also one of my favorite Burgundies these days. The 2011 is a bit on the lighter side, with pretty aromatics, mid-weight structure and fine balance. It offers lovely immediacy and plenty of charm, but it is not as complex or deep as the finest editions. Even so, it works beautifully with the food and a real joy to savor over dinner.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. This Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut St Jacques has a vexing, boiled cabbage-scented nose that is quite malodorous. Severely reduced and vegetal, I cannot understand where this wine is coming from.
Really quite rich and flattering. Some attractive tension. More concentrated than most 2011s. Just slightly jagged but GV . (JH)
