Readers who are lucky enough to acquire Jean-Michel Deiss' 1998 Riesling Schoenenbourg are advised that it will require decanting (for near-term drinking) because it is in a reductive state. (Deiss says that this is the maladie du Schoenenbourg, or sickness of the Schoenenbourg, and is typical for wines from this terroir.) With air, it displays pure, searing, mineral, and fresh herb aromas. Its medium to full-bodied, soft, silky palate is precise, tightly wound, and crammed with herbal tea, sweet yellow and white fruits, as well as copious quantities of spices whose flavors last throughout its exceptionally long finish.
