From The Purple Notebook – Dinner in South London. Big, fat, ready. Just not oily, but very spicy and deep and slightly cloudy without being as porridge-like as some Marcassin Chardonnays in aspect. Slightly green. Honeyed. Slightly disappointing that it’s quite so ready. (JR)

The soft 1999 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch (2,000 cases) is made in a typical California style. Orange marmalade, pineapple, and mango aromas and flavors are apparent in this full-bodied, rich, smoky Chardonnay. While exceptional, it lacks the minerality and definition of Kistler's other offerings. It will have 4-6 years of ageability. (Not yet released) Tel. (707) 823-5603; fax (707) 823-6709
Slightly hazy appearance and bit more yellow than the McCrea. Richer, more perfumed aromas of orange blossom, nuts, spices and dried fruits. Concentrated, dense and suave, with lively balancing acidity and floral lift. Kistler describes this wine as "one of our softer '99s." Finishes with very good length. A strong note of coconut lingers in the empty glass.
