Score 18.5/20 · Drink 2000, Jancis Robinson MW, Dec 2002

The Chardonnay portion was increased to 76 per cent in this wine because it reached such stupendous ripeness this year and it was thought it would increase the wine's ageing potential. Greenish gold. Doesn't look anything like 40+ years old. Sweet and fragrant with an undertow of hazelnuts. Very easy to like. Extremely fine bead that keeps this fully mature wine refreshing. Deep-flavoured. Tight knit. Just a little too old for me (cf the 1979) and slightly light on the finish. More refreshing than the 1928. Good acidity apparently, however low it is analytically. (JR)
