The 1959 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot opens in the glass with notes of sweet berry fruit, loamy soil, smoked meats and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and elegantly muscular, with velvety tannins and an ample core of fruit, it's in its prime today. Apparently, the bottle was even better when first opened than it was when I tasted it a few hours later.
