The 2000 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is an absolute delight. Open-knit on the nose, it is precise, even if a bit low-key initially, with red berry fruit, sous-bois and tobacco scents. The palate is open and transparent, perhaps missing a bit of complexity on the mid-palate and needing more tension and mineralité on the finish. But it does meliorate with aeration, cohering nicely and developing a lovely silky texture. Fine. Tasted at the Les Amoureuses vertical at Hide restaurant.

The 2001 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is certainly matured in colour with a wide tawny rim and a light core. The bouquet has an earthy, slight animal quality, missing the cohesion and freshness one usually associates with Mugnier. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a light seam of acidity, pleasant but missing vigour and it seems to fade on the finish. I wonder if there are better bottles out there? Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.

Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier's 2000 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses opens in the glass, gaining purity and definition with air after a rather muddled start. Aromas of sweet cherry, peony and strawberry mingle with hints of soil and espresso, preceding a medium to full-bodied, velvety and supple wine that just lacks some intensity and energy by comparison with more recent vintages—or, indeed, with Mugnier's 1999s.
