The 2002 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is a wonderful wine that is probably reaching its peak at two decades old. Wonderful transparency (one of the leitmotifs of the vintage) with crystalline red fruit that seems so vivid, with very subtle undergrowth notes in the background. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine spine of acidity, hints of crustacea towards the delineated finish. This is the finest bottle that I have encountered, and it is difficult to resist at the moment. Will it get even better? I don't think so. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.

The 2002 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a very pure bouquet with Morello cherry and crushed strawberry, all quite intense and gaining volume in the glass. The palate is noticeably sweet on the entry, quite tart and vibrant although it is missing the length of the 2002 Bonnes-Mares by direct comparison. But it is adorned with a gorgeous oyster shell finish which is what leads me to identify it as Les Cras. Tasted blind at the Roumier dinner in Hong Kong.

Relatively light ruby colour. Round and lively though not intense (are all these 2002s suffering for being tasted immediately after the 2003s?). Real zest and direction. Transparency. Real burgundy qualities. Still quite a way to go… More complexity than most though pretty delicate. Real finesse. (JR)

Good bright full red. Musky red fruits and flowers on the nose. Sweet, lively and intense, with classic Chambolle flavors of musky raspberry and strawberry, flowers and minerals. Wonderfully delicate, floral wine, and yet it finishes with palate-staining length and excellent grip.
