A blend of 100% old vine Grenache (96+ year-old vines), the 2009 Domaine Galévan Châteauneuf-du-Pape St. Georges delivers a smoking bouquet of sweet red berry fruits, spice-cabinet, licorice, and dried underbrush. This carries into a full-bodied, fresh, focused Châteauneuf-du-Pape that has a seamless, elegant texture, solid structure, and a lengthy, heady finish where firm, ripe tannin emerges. The tannin and structure is what keeps this fresh and focused; it should be better in 2-3 years, and drink well for a decade or longer after that. This estate is one to watch and all of the wines have beautiful purity of fruit, elegant textures, and solid structure.

The brilliant 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape St.-Georges reveals a touch of toasty oak in its sensational bouquet of garrigue, licorice, black currant and black cherry fruit. Dense, rich and tightly knit, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring (atypical for a 2009), and should keep for 15+ years. This relatively small Chateauneuf du Pape estate is owned by Coralie Goumarre. Opaque ruby. Bright, assertively perfumed aromas of black raspberry, cherry-cola, potpourri and rose oil. Bright and spicy, offering mineral-driven dark berry flavors that show very good clarity and a sexy floral quality. Tangy acidity gives lift and cut to a long, sappy finish. The blend of density and energy in this all-grenache wine is intriguing. The regular 2009 showed too much reduction for me to judge it this year.

Dark purple. Very volatile. Very sweet and very alcoholic but raw on the finish. Hollow. Exaggerated and really challenging to taste. (JR)
