(a blend of 60% carinena, 30% garnacha and 10% cabernet sauvignon) Full medium ruby. Plum, licorice, minerals, tar and smoke on the nose. Fat, sweet and impressively deep, with superripe but firm flavors of black cherry, Linzer torte and minerals. Impressively generous, layered wine with terrific vinosity and a long finish that features, ripe, noble tannins. According to the American importer, the carinena vines here are more than a century old. .

This blend of 60% Carignan, 30% Grenache, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon is fashioned from incredibly old vines (the Carignan and Grenache are both over 100 years of age), and spends 15 months in 100% new oak. A stunning perfume of acacia flowers, blueberries, and black fruits jumps from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored 2001. It possesses terrific purity, opulence, and richness as well as a layered mouthfeel. I am always a little skeptical when a wine possesses such a high percentage of Carignan (even if it is ancient), but Fra Fulco’s offering is both elegant and powerful, revealing tremendous heart/soul and personality. Blackish crimson. Sweet, overripe and slightly fake. Thick and sweet. Heavy, over-wrought and over-extracted – where’s the poetry and terroir and refreshment? Just a great big monster squeezed from the land. Hot finish. Impressive but not that enjoyable. (JR)
