Tasting notes
Saturated ruby. Pungent aromas of black raspberry, smoky minerals, licorice and underbrush, with a gamey nuance building with air. Dense and weighty on entry, then powerful and energetic in the mid-palate, with distinct sweetness to its dark fruit and spicecake flavors. A big, full-bodied wine for the vintage, with broad, nicely integrated tannins shaping the finish.

Showing a slightly modern style, with vanilla-tinged dark berry fruit, licorice, cedar and leather aromas and flavors, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Generations is medium-bodied, concentrated, beautifully balanced and has a streamlined, focused finish. A superb 2011, it will be one of the longer lived wines in the vintage and will drink nicely for over a decade. Drink now-2023. Importer: Shaw-Ross, Miramar, FL; tel. (954) 430-5036
35% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre. Exceptionally dark crimson. Almost impenetrable. Exotic black-cherry aromas. Lot of work on giving this a very flattering texture. Oddly the acidity is marked – maybe there were some stems in here? – and the drying finish is cool. Clearly this is a wine into which an enormous amount of effort has gone. The fruit is a bit difficult to find though after all this work! (JR)
